Research Engineer in Human Machine Teaming & Collaborative Autonomy / Computer Vision

Role Overview: RTX Technology Research Center (RTRC) has a newly created position of Research Engineer in Human Machine Teaming & Collaborative Autonomy / Computer Vision. In this role, you will join the Autonomous Collaborative Systems (ACS) team in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) discipline at RTRC. The team is engaged in a wide variety of research areas including computer vision, decision making, Knowledge representation, trustworthy and explainable AI and human-machine symbiosis for a variety of high impact real world problems in the aerospace, manufacturing, and defense industries. Examples of relevant problems include multi-agent coordination, self-functioning systems of systems, cybersecurity, multi-domain data fusion for threat assessment and monitoring, automated visual inspection of parts, and robotic perception and manipulation.

What you will do: We are looking for a highly motivated candidate eager to apply and extend state of the art Artificial Intelligence approaches to contribute to realizing a vision of: i) intelligent systems collaborating with humans in the manufacturing, assembly, servicing, inspection, and repair of products, and ii) system intelligence and autonomy enabling autonomous capabilities including sensing & perception, task & motion planning, reasoning & decision making, human-autonomy teaming, and robot learning.

What You Will Do:

Researching, designing and developing algorithms for intelligent control and decision-making, human-machine collaboration, networked and teamed systems, and next generation autonomous platforms;

researching, designing, and developing prototype computer vision algorithms for a wide variety of applicable domains in autonomy, robotics, manufacturing, aviation, and inspection.

Prototyping and simulating autonomous and collaborative systems by writing code, developing software (simulation and visualization), creating algorithms, interfacing software/hardware, and supporting real-time demonstrations of autonomy in live, and simulation test environments;

designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, and documenting the findings in the form of technical reports and publications;

leading and supporting externally and internally sponsored programs, writing external and internal research proposals;

building relationships to support partnership with leading, worldwide institutions (university, government agencies, national labs, and professional organizations) and meet organizational objectives;

disseminating research results through reports, conference proceedings, presentations, and technical papers for archival journals.

The preferred candidate will have a strong understanding of science and engineering principles and a proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, or publications at leading workshops, journals, or conferences in Machine Learning (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR), Robotics (ICRA, IROS, RSS, CoRL, HRI, RO-MAN), Computer Vision (CVPR, ICCV, ECCV) or other top tier research venues.

Qualifications You Must Have: The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following:

  • 3+ year(s) of hands-on experience in working with autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, deep/reinforcement/machine learning, robotics, dynamics and controls, flight test and evaluation, modeling and simulation, data science, and statistical analysis.

  • 3+ year(s) of hands-on experience in working with deep knowledge in computer vision, deep neural networks, graph analytics, time series analysis. Experience in one or more of the following areas: neural 3D representations, 3D reconstruction (structure from motion or simultaneous localization and mapping - SLAM), generative models (generative adversarial networks, or diffusion models), activity detection/recognition, tracking/segmentation, large-scale training/deployment of AI models, reinforcement learning.

  • Extensive experience in sensor fusion, signal processing and exposure to new sensing modalities like event-based cameras and associated algorithms.

  • Experience working with DARPA, AFRL, ONR, ARL and/or IARPA or any other related government organizations in the area of intelligent autonomous and collaborative systems for defense and aerospace applications.

  • Experience with programming languages (Python, C, C++, CUDA), ROS, cloud computing, and configuration management.

  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card) status is required.

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience setting technical direction from initiation to execution of projects and managing technical deliverables for a small team.

  • Programming: PyTorch/TensorFlow, Caffe, Theano, Julia, Java; Real-time control prototyping and Software/Hardware-in-the-Loop testing

  • Experience with multimodal modeling, large language models (LLM) or related topics.

  • Experience in developing in a modern software development environment that includes automated testing, continuous integration, and deployment, and "DevSecOps" environments.

Education: Ph.D. in Aerospace, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.

management. Practical to substantial knowledge of RTX projects, programs or systems with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.

Typically requires:

A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience

Engineering/Other Technical Positions:

Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
