Northern Lights YMCA Day Camp Counselor in Escanaba, Michigan

Under the direction of the Camp Director, Youth Program Coordinator, or Senior Camp Counselor and in accordance with the association and policies of the Northern Lights YMCA, the camp counselor will be responsible for the health, welfare and happiness of all campers in his/her care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Create a positive environment conducive to child & staff development.
  2. Interact with children, act as a role model.
  3. Maintain all YMCA standards values, and rules.
  4. Be aware of all safety hazards. Implement first aid, CPR, or AED training if necessary. Be able to recognize symptoms of a concussion. Be sure to record all injuries.
  5. Ensure no distraction or interference with the delivery of camp activities (no reading, texting, talking on cell phone, or wearing headphones while on duty).
  6. Be always aware of the location of each camper.
  7. Crate appropriate lesson plans (encourage positive learning) and enthusiastically facilitate activities. Incorporate YMCA core values in all lesson plans.
  8. Ensure safety and cleanliness of program area and equipment.
  9. Inform proper staff of equipment needs including first aid.
  10. Maintain required current certifications.
  11. Assist with PRE/POST camp and water safety duties.
  12. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  13. Provide excellent service to members and participants.
  14. Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Counselors must have current certification in CPR, First Aid, Heads UP Concussion and AED. Can be completed at training if needed.
  2. Must be a mature individual with the ability to operate independently
  3. Must have excellent human relation skills and ability to maintain positive communication with program participants, parents, volunteers and staff.
  4. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Must have ability to perceive audio & visual alerts for emergency purposes.

Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.

Be able to participate in physical activity for various amounts of time. (Swimming, hikes, demonstrating game skills, etc,).

Must be able to access all areas of building or off-site location
